English Country House, Master Bedroom

Traditional and timeless

A neutral space evoking a calm, peaceful atmosphere was created, highlighting the natural textures of the soft furnishings and removing any busy distractions.

Design concept

Seeing as I’d selected rich shades for the rest of the house, I felt it was important their bedroom was more neutral with a sanctuary like feel as in addition to sleeping, the client practised meditation and yoga in there. I wanted to ensure that her most private and personal space was set up to support that, as well as sleep. The bedroom was south facing and this sunlight is very yellow in quality. The aim was to stay away from a shade with a yellow base, in order to avoid the dreaded ‘magnolia’ effect.

I advised the client to paint the entire bedroom including the ceiling in order to maximise the feeling of space and light. This is very effective in rooms such as this that have unusual angles in their ceilings, and/or skylights. It produces a wonderfully spacious and light effect.

Paint palette

I selected Dimity by Farrow and Ball for this bedroom’s ceiling and walls, a red-based neutral, very muted and soft with a ‘rural, countryish’ feel about it. It is perfect for the needs of this south facing bedroom which receives substantial amounts of sunlight due to the wonderful floor to ceiling French windows.

As dimity is red based it is still warm, with enough tone in it to provide a pretty accompaniment to the soft furnishings as well as pick out the warm creams, peach and pinks in the pattern of the cherished vintage chairs.

The combination of colours that make up this shade: support the restful activities that take place in here; meditation, yoga and sleeping, as well as evoking a feeling of space, light and calm. In this case, Dimity works as a warm backdrop and companion to the existing furnishings.
